Description | Study Booklet
Colossians is named for the city of Colosse, where the church that it was addressed to was located. The book was also to be read in the neighbouring church at Laodicea (4:16).
The church in Colosse was struggling particularly with a dangerous heresy that later became known as Gnosticism. Gnosticism taught that God is good and matter is evil. It taught that Jesus was less than God and required that higher knowledge above scripture was needed for salvation. This desire and belief for enlightenment became a basis for mystic beliefs and the practice of mysticism.
The church also struggled with aspects of Jewish legalism that had crept in urging rigid asceticism. These two aspects of false teaching were threatening the teaching of the gospel of Jesus and hence the apostle Paul wrote this letter to the church in response.
Gnosticism, Mysticism and Asceticism are still common today in our culture and continue to influence many followers or Jesus in our churches. Though not always in the same forms and practices as in during biblical times, many Christians today still struggle to make salvation about Jesus alone and nothing more.
We encourage you to download and print the study booklet as you follow along in the weekly thoughts. As you walk through Colossians in your quiet-times, and share in your community groups, we desire that God would touch your life. The book of Colossians is a book of deep theological insight, as well as a source of practical living for God. Colossians is “the Word for Living” that bears fruit in our Christian lives and increases our understanding of the truths of God’s grace.
It is our prayer that as we walk step-by-step and verse-by-verse, we will see that the Word of God is the Word of power and the Word of practical Christ-living.
